Gov. Perry issues disaster proclamation due to threat of wildfires
Gov. Rick Perry issued a state disaster proclamation Wednesday for 152 counties in response to the threat posed by wildfires rapidly spreading in areas across the state. This disaster proclamation allows affected counties to be eligible for state assistance. more
 

USDA proposes additional port for control of Mexican cattle
The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS)  proposed a rule on Wednesday to include an additional port in San Luis, Ariz. for controlling the entry of cattle from Mexico to protect American livestock from disease. Consideration will be given to comments received on or before March 31. more
 

Special Rangers arrest suspect in saddle, equipment theft case
With the help of local authorities, TSCRA Special Rangers John Bradshaw and Troy McKinney arrested Joshua D. Jones, 23, of Sherman, last week in connection with the theft of saddles and miscellaneous equipment in Grayson and Bowie counties. more
 

Corn and cattle groups, not government, behind E. coli research
A recent article in the Des Moines Register reported that the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) is conducting research to determine the impact, if any, of feeding ethanol co-products on the levels of E.coli  0157:H7 found in cattle. But according to MARC Director Dr. Mohammed Koohmaraie, that is not the case; the research is actually the brainchild of corn and beef industry groups-not the government. more
 

Texas Beef Council launches new Web site
The Texas Beef Council recently unveiled an updated version of their checkoff-funded Web site, www.txbeef.org. Complete with delicious beef recipes, cooking tips and beef nutrition information, the new Web site features include instructional beef cooking videos, a recipe rating system and a 'My Profile' section where visitors can create a recipe book to save their favorite beef dishes. more

January cumulative moisture totals were below normal for most of Texas, according to the National Weather Service. "We definitely need rain in the near future," said Kyle Kight, AgriLife Extension agent. more
