A good ranch horse can be a joy to own — a useful animal that can help work cattle calmly and efficiently. Certainly horses have more personality and quirks than a gas-powered four-wheeler. These workers deserve good care to keep them in shape to do the job you need them to do.

The American Quarter Horse can
perform a wide variety of tasks. In addition to the
quarter-mile race for which the breed is named, this versatile
horse excels in many arenas. This is never more evident than
when looking around the office at Harrison Quarter Horses in
Fulshear, about 35 miles west of Houston.
Horses are not Cattle. That's one of the key things to remember about maintaining horses on pasture.

Dr. David Freeman, professor of animal science and Cooperative Extension Equine Specialist at Oklahoma State University, says when the forage is lower in value, cattle can use the energy component of fibers much more efficiently than horses. “When we’ve got improved pastures,” he says, “the times of the year with good, green growth — spring, for example — then the fiber digestibility and the ability for the horse to pull the energy out of the forage is fairly close to how efficiently a cow can do it.”
